Chapitre un, Al Spence

«Chapitre un» is a live reading of the first chapter of «La Timone », a larger text that explores critical illness through a queer collection of scattered memories. The book takes place in the South of France and follows around a teenager who likes the sun, kisses girls in secret and is afraid of going to bed..

«It’s January of 2013, I’m 17. Have a boyfriend called Théo and a group of mates. I’ve sent out my applications to study business at uni. In my bedroom, I worry about a headache.»

«Chapitre un» is a story about a hospital, a doctor’s office, a pair of tapestry Doc Martens and a gymnasium.

Al Spence (1995) is a Franco-British artist living in Bergen. They work of sculpture and text (separately), though both intersect in a quiet exploration of terror. This stems from a careful and almost contradictory devotion to both horror and care. With sculpture, their process is more influenced by popular craft and repetition. Their installations navigate misunderstandings and silly imitations of existing symbols of threat. Their labor with text resides in light renditions of terror and confusion. They mostly write about critical illness, queer remembering and mischief, through disputable autobiography. This practice is compatible with both live and autonomous reading.
