Landscape #3b, Carlos A. Correia
Carlos A. Correia is presenting Landscape #3b, a smaller but not less important version of his previous solo exhibition Landscape #3 (2019, Trondhjems Kunstforening). This time, he has chosen to exhibit works that have never been shown in Norway along with some other artworks.
Correia’s practice has its foundations on the continuous exploration of the problems of "representation" (or translation of the world) using different tools and artistic methodologies. Nature is most of the time the referent to unfold the problem of translation, and often landscape is the outcome of this exercise. He is interested in the unlimited and sometimes the indescribable results that his practice leads to. Believing that approaching the same subject through different perspectives, mediums and materials, Carlos gets closer to obtain a better overview and knowledge of what surrounds us.
Returning to Landscape #3, Elena Pérez wrote “is about nature, and the ways in which we, humans, interact with it to get to know what surrounds us better. The starting point of the exhibition is the relationship between two seemingly clearly defined concepts. Nature and Landscape, nature being the raw material, the source, and landscape being its representation. Nature being a whole and landscape being a fragment, a product that humans make to understand or even to control nature.
Through the different works displayed at the exhibition we see that that these two concepts are not as clearly defined as one may initially think. What is nature and what is landscape blur; what is the origin and what is a part of the whole mix, getting to a point where it is impossible to discern what is what.”
Landscape #3b doesn’t present us a final conclusion but instead a slow progress of how we perceive and represent what surrounds us.
Bio
Carlos A. Correia (b. 1989) is a Portuguese visual artist based in Trondheim, city where he graduated with a Master in Fine Art from the Trondheim Academy of Fine Art, NTNU in 2015. He has been exhibiting regularly in Norway and Portugal. He is interested in questioning “landscape”, a very old art genre but also a word that stands for nature, as an attempt to frame it or even conceptualise it. It is in the very necessity of attributing names to things that the referential word landscape appears. Naturally, this process (perception to its representation) is not something specific to this referent but everything that surrounds us.
Carlos together with Joana Bruno runs SMØR Press, a small publishing house that specialises in Risograph printing. He is also the co-founder and project leader of Slå På Kunst along with Inga Skålnes, an arts organisation with a focus on art initiatives in non-conventional spaces.
