At the start of November, Studio K will be turned into a space for researching sorrow. Through an interactive art project, the viewer will be invited to participate in a writing workshop. Together we explore experiences with sorrow, specifically the white sorrow. White sorrow is a term that comes from psychology and talks about a sorrow without cause. This is a sorrow related to the feeling of emptiness. A sorrow without conscious grieving, - a kind of sorrow over nothing.
The Laboratory of sorrow is led by Julie Kirkeng who is an artist/researcher based in Kristiansand. Through Studio K, she will exhibit some of her works, including embroidery. Here she uses parchment paper as her material, both as her thread and her fabric as she artistically examines white sorrow.

About the Artist/Researcher:
Julie Kirkeng is a research fellow at the University of Agder and is working on an artistic research project on grief. In her research, the potential of participatory art is examined in the face of people's experience of grief.
She has a master's degree (MA) in Art in Society and a bachelor's degree (BA) in Art and Dissemination, both from OsloMet.
In her artistic projects, Kirkeng works with embroidery in an abstract and conceptual way. Human experiences and existential themes such as body and mind, and the sacred are themes she has recently explored. Now the research revolves around grief and participatory art – that is, art as a space of social exploration.
