as I remember to spit myself out, exhibition Sofie Tveitnes
Scoby, short for "symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast", is an organism that grows and lives in a combination of sugar, tea and starter. The exhibition that will be shown at Studio K is centered around scoby that the artist Sofie Tveitnes has worked with and grown over the past year. This will be presented together with a sound-work that will fill the room while affecting the scobys growth-pattern.
Philosopher Julia Kristeva highlighted in "Powers of horror – an essay on abjection" how bodily fluids, such as vomit, blood or saliva, exist both as part of the body's interior and exterior. Encountering these fluids can be disgusting. What was part of the body is now outside and thus becomes repulsive.
With the scobies that grow in the exhibit, the distinction between interior and exterior is also unclear. Where what is consumed is itself, which provides both a form of nourishment and hunger. Scoby may evoke associations with mold or decay, but is essentially a «clean» bacterial culture. Linked to Kristeva's concept of abjection, the exchange between interior and exterior reminds us of the body's vulnerability and connection to the enviorment while our idea of what is socially acceptable or «clean» is disrupted.
Sofie Tveitnes is a transdiciplinary artist, whos work mainly exists within new media, sculpture and installation. In her artistic practice she calls attention to posthumanism and transformation specifically through material bodies potential for change. Former student of Stavanger School of Art, she is currently taking her bachelor in Fine Art at the Faculty of Fine Art, Music and Design in Bergen.
